PRIME is the only national organisation dedicated to helping people
aged over 50 to set up in business. We are a not-for-profit company
whose aim is to release the untapped potential of 50+ enterprise. While
this may not be the route for all, we believe that everyone should
have the opportunity for self-fulfilment and independence that working
for oneself can provide.
Who does PRIME help?
In Britain there are 3.6. million people aged 50-65 (and twelve million
over 50) who aren’t earning an income. This is often not by choice.
Since 60% have only their state pension for retirement, many live in
poverty. PRIME is here to empower them to help themselves.
What does PRIME do?
Through the PRIME campaign we encourage those over 50 to:
 |
consider the possibility of self-employment
or starting a business |
 |
find a local organisation that
can give them initial business help and advice free |
We also try to persuade politicians and decision-makers to broaden
the options for this undervalued section of society – and to
tackle the barriers they face.
Through the PRIME partnership we liaise with agencies working in the
field of business support. We encourage them to:
 |
publicise the message that they
provide help for over-50s who are starting out |
 |
continuously review and improve
the service they offer |
 |
learn about new ideas and practices
relevant to this age group |
We also work with Regional Development Agencies, through a network
of PRIME regional managers and organisations supporting the over-50s,
to improve opportunities across the country.
Through the PRIME understanding we:
 |
provide a focus for research
into 50+ self-employment and enterprise |
 |
assemble knowledge and best practice
guidelines to influence decision-makers |
 |
explore and disseminate new thinking
as it evolves |
Why is PRIME so necessary?
It’s a waste of resources, energy and experience for so many
millions in this age group to stand reluctantly outside the economic
mainstream. Particularly since – when given the encouragement
to go into business – they’re more likely to succeed than
anyone else.
Self-employment can offer personal dignity, financial independence
and individual satisfaction. Only PRIME is single-mindedly committed
to helping those over 50 achieve all this.
